Mansions of the Durand

Meet at Durand Park - corner of Park and Herkimer streets, Hamilton

This very popular tour of the Durand Neighbourhood will lead you down beautiful treed streets and hightlight the residential architecture of Hamilton landmarks such as Ravenscliffe, Inglewood and Ballinahinch.


Downtown Core and Gore Park
Sunday October 4th: 2:00 p.m.
Meet at the statue of Queen Victoria at the corner of King and James.

This walk traces Hamilton’s history through the stories of great buildings such as the recently restored Victoria Hall, the Royal Connaught and the John Sopinka Courthouse dating from the 1850s to the 1960s.

The Mountain Brow and Auchmar/ Claremont Park
Sunday October 18th: 2:00 p.m.
Meet at the northwest corner of Fennel and West 5th Ave.

Explore Isaac Buchanan’s former estate on the mountain brow.  Tour the landscaped grounds of Auchmar Estate and with guest tour guide Shannon Kyles, Mohawk College faculty member and architecture editor for Arabella magazine, trace the evolution of the former Claremont Park into today’s mental health hospital.
NOTE: Tour of grounds only (no interior access).
No parking available on the grounds of Auchmar Estate.

In conjunction with this exhibit, Ann Gillespie will give an illustrated talk, “Hamilton’s Heritage of Victorian Architectural Sheet-Metalwork”.  She will describe how sheet-metal building components were made, the types of businesses engaged in their fabrication, and show examples of interior and exterior sheet-metalwork, including an upper facade fabricated entirely of galvanized iron.
